Akoya Pearls

Akoya pearls are produced from an oyster, which is the smallest pearl producer identified in the oyster family. Akoya pearls are considered the Japanese pearl, and are cultured mainly in Ehime, Nagasaki, Oita and Kumamoto. Japanese Akoya pearls were the very first pearls to be cultured on a commercial scale. This was developed by the founder of pearl cultivation - Kokichi Mikimoto in the early 1900’s.


The best quality Akoya pearl is one that has the ideal amount of crystals as well as nacre, and is considered the most radiant and beautiful of all pearls. The average size of an Akoya pearl necklaces ranges from as small as 2 mm to 9.5 mm. All the different sizes can be used for jewelry purposes, but it is mostly the 5 -8 mm sized pearls that are frequently used for making necklaces.
